The best photo spots in Snow Canyon State Park

Red and white sandstone, black lava rock and golden light, just minutes from St. George. Here's where to go and what to know.

Snow Canyon is my favorite place near St. George for family and couples photos. In fifteen minutes you can go from red cliffs to white sandstone to black lava, and most spots are a short walk from the parking areas.

Petrified Dunes

Best for: Families and couples who want sweeping red-and-white sandstone

These rolling, frozen sand dunes turned to stone are red, cream and pink, with ridges that catch the light beautifully at golden hour. There's lots of room to spread out, and kids love exploring.

  • Short walk from parking
  • Gorgeous at sunset
  • Wear shoes with grip

Snow Canyon Scenic Overlook

Best for: Big views of the whole canyon

The overlook on the north end of the park shows the canyon spreading out below. It's an easy, accessible spot and a great place for wide, dramatic portraits. It's also the only place in the park where drones may be allowed, with extra approval.

  • Easy access
  • Wide canyon views
  • Good for large families

Whiterocks

Best for: Soft, bright portraits and a different look

The white sandstone formations at Whiterocks bounce soft light onto faces, which is wonderful for maternity, couples and portraits. The color palette is lighter and dreamier than the red cliffs.

  • Flattering soft light
  • Pairs well with neutral outfits

Lava fields & Black Rocks

Best for: Bold, editorial-feeling photos

Dark lava rock against red cliffs makes for striking contrast. It's a great second location in the same session when you want variety.

  • Rough footing, so wear sturdy shoes
  • Dramatic contrast

Cougar Cliffs & Paradise Canyon

Best for: Quieter corners and red-rock walls

These areas offer tall red walls and quieter spots away from the busiest parking lots. They're great when we want a few more intimate moments without other visitors in the background.

  • Usually quieter
  • Great red-rock backdrop

Good to know

Photographer pass

Professional photographers need Snow Canyon's annual Professional Photography pass, and each shoot is requested at least five days ahead. Brae handles this for her sessions.

Hours and vehicles

Shoots are allowed from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The pass covers one vehicle with up to eight people. Extra vehicles pay the park's day-use fee.

Props and confetti

Props need park approval, and toss or release items like petals, confetti and smoke bombs aren't allowed.

Desert tortoise season

From mid-February through November, stay on trails and watch the roads. Snow Canyon protects the desert tortoise.

Park rules and fees change. Brae confirms the current permits and passes for every session she books.
