Light changes everything in the desert. The same red cliff can look flat and harsh at noon and glow like it's lit from within an hour before sunset. Here's how I plan sessions around the seasons and the sun.
Spring (March to May)
Best for: Mild weather, green trees and blooming desert
Comfortable temperatures, fresh green cottonwoods along the rivers and wildflowers in good years. It's one of the most popular times for family and engagement sessions, so book a little early. Zion gets busy with spring break crowds.
- Mild temperatures
- Popular, so book early
Summer (June to August)
Best for: Lavender season and sunrise sessions
St. George summers are very hot, so I schedule sessions right at sunrise or in the last light before sunset. Early summer is also lavender season in Veyo. Higher-elevation spots stay a little cooler.
- Sunrise or sunset only
- Bring water
- Lavender bloom
Fall (September to November)
Best for: Golden cottonwoods and perfect evenings
Fall is my favorite season here. Evenings are warm but comfortable, and in late fall the cottonwoods along the Virgin River in Zion turn gold. It's the busiest season for family photos, so dates fill fast.
- Golden leaves late fall
- Most in-demand season
Winter (December to February)
Best for: Fewer crowds and soft, low light
Winter is underrated. The sun stays lower all day, which means softer light, and parks are much quieter. Occasional snow on the red rock near Zion is breathtaking. Bring a warm layer for between shots.
- Quiet parks
- Soft light
- Possible snow on red rock
Golden hour
Best for: Every session, every season
The hour before sunset gives warm, flattering light and makes red rock glow. Sunrise has a similar softness, with fewer people and cooler temperatures. I plan every outdoor session around one of these two windows.
- About 60 minutes before sunset
- Sunrise for privacy
